Danny Murphy has been the general favourite in the polls since this site set up. Not only that, but his popularity as the number one candidate gradually rose from 33% of voters from the first poll back in April to a whopping 63% in the recently concluded off-season poll.
However, this tweet posted by TSF at 8.27pm on July 28th would suggest Murphy is not The Secret Footballer:
“I hear the Argentinian FA are to merge their top 2 leagues. Handy for River Plate…and I thought FIFA were bad.”
Not a great deal in that you might think. However, it’s all about the timing. This tweet was posted just as Murphy would have walked off the field of play in Fulham’s third qualifying round first-leg match away to RNK Split. It was also posted via web as opposed to mobile, so unlikely he cheekily got his phone out straight after coming off to tweet!
Thank you to Dominic Conquest and Mitch Moth for spotting this.
People will ask, ‘Was it a journalist/family member doing it in his place to throw people off the scent?’. Personally I wonder if TSF would really go to the bother? But it’s your thoughts I want so below is a poll to gauge opinion:
What's the deal with the Jul 28th tweet?
- TSF isn't Danny Murphy (65%, 133 Votes)
- Danny Murphy got someone to tweet on his behalf (35%, 71 Votes)
Total Voters: 204

Interesting! You can tweet using a time delay though.
There are loads of ways he could have done it, incuding several apps that let you schedule tweets. Going to the bother of doing that would probably part of the fun of being the secret footbaler!
Aye. It’s all irrelevant now though as Murphy is ruled out after today’s article in which TSF revealed that he’s played for a newly promoted Premiership club -something Murphy has never done.
Is it not Charlie Adam?
Its not David James as the SF once commented on mis controlling a pass in a defensive role….
No, he’s Scottish

are you taking into account the time zones? considering it was a european away leg.
Not necessarily – I think he would consider a “newly promotted” team to be a team that has come up in the last 1-3 seasons, which would mean Charlton while DM was there.
He was also at Crewe when they were newly promoted from Div.3 to Div.2
DM=TSF
But if you read that article it’s made clear that it’s for a Premiership team, and that he is referring to their first season as a promoted club (getting excited about appearing on MOTD -he’s not going to be suddenly excited by playing for Charlton 1-3 seasons after their promotion when he’s already played for years at Liverpool)
I don’t think you’ve taken timezones into account here!
I still reckon it’s Murphy.
Murphy has slated stoke for their tactics and he mentions stoke and their block tactics in the book several times. He also mentions the transfer between seth johnson ex-crewe player to leeds several times and trhe 35k a week contract he got
from risdale when he was only expecting 15k a week.
It also appears murphy toured south korea pre season with fulham in 2008 which i a story in the book
can’t be Danny, his dad died in 2006 so couldnt be milan v spurs meeting capello.
