A brilliant last piece of the season from TSF giving a great insight in to what it feels like for a footballer going in to ‘Survival Sunday’. He draws from his own experiences, revealing that he himself had been involved in a last match of the season relegation fight.
The web address of the page suggests it was a Premier League relegation match too: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2011/may/21/premier-league-relegation-secret-footballer?
It’s a real shame the articles aren’t going to be continuing through the summer, but hopefully TSF gets another season both on the pitch and off it.
Anyone know of a secret cricketer…?

Note that in this article the player touches on the fact that their last-day relegation fight was a home match, though when Konchesky and Murphy escaped relegation (on the final weekend of the 2007-08 season, at Portsmouth) with Fulham it was away from home. Same goes for the West Ham players whose relegation escape in 2006-07 came on the last day at Old Trafford.
Other than that, having witnessed Lee Bowyer and Anton Ferdinand getting interviewed I doubt wether either one is capable of spelling his own name never mind writing a weekly column, however heavily ghosted it may be…
The only candidates I can think of – based on the fact that they (a) partook in final-day relegation match at home, and (b) are pretty experienced and have cited playing at pretty big clubs during their career (earlier TSF piece) – are Nick Barmby and Kevin Kilbane (Hull City 2008-09 based on (a) – prob more likely to be Barmby when you factor in (b)), and maybe Kieran Richardson (West Brom, 2004-05).
Where in the article does he touch on it being a home game?!
He did say the fans were tense and not a help. That may have indicated a home match. Or then, it might not have. To me, the cleverly vague reference indicates a good editor, ghostwriter, or both.
I still think it’s Kevin Davies.
Did Bolton not escape relegation on the last day of 2007/08 under Megson?
